JOHANNESBURG – Have you noticed increased internet speeds?
According to speed testing site, OOKLA, South Africa ranks 57th in the world for mobile internet — below the UK at 51, but ahead of Japan who is sitting in 60th place.
But, we are lagging in the fixed broadband sector, ranking at 103.
Meanwhile, the Pan-African telecommunications group Paratus Group has launched the fastest fibre express route from Johannesburg to Europe.
WATCH: INTERNET DISRUPTIONS | MULTIPLE CABLE BREAKS LEAVE AFRICA UNPLUGGED
Paratus recently completed the 1890-kilometre fibre link between Johannesburg, via Botswana to Swakopmund in Namibia.
This then connects with the Equiano sub-sea cable that runs from Namibia to Lisbon, on to London and the rest of Europe.
They hope to mitigate any possible fibre outages and other network disruptions after recent cable breaks.
